24 Hour Water Fast Study

Water.  You know it’s good for you and that you should drink 6-8 glasses of water per day.  But have you ever considered a 24 hour water fast?

Recent groundbreaking studies by the Intermountain Medical Center Heart Institute have found that periodic fasting is beneficial to health.  Specifically the study shows that a 24 hour water fast can lower your risk of developing coronary artery disease and diabetes, as well as improve your blood cholesterol levels.  During the 24 hour water fasting researchers also recorded increased levels of HGH (human growth hormone) which works to protect lean muscle and metabolic balance.

The article published on Science Daily reports:

The discovery expands upon a 2007 Intermountain Healthcare study that revealed an association between fasting and reduced risk of coronary heart disease, the leading cause of death among men and women in America. In the new research, fasting was also found to reduce other cardiac risk factors, such as triglycerides, weight, and blood sugar levels.

The evidence is validation to those of us who practice fasting and it seems to provide inspiration for the Intermountain Medical Center Heart Institute to conduct further studies on the subject.   Since the study focused on water fasting, it may prompt some to ask if water fasting is preferable to juice fasting.

It has always been my opinion that a juice cleanse provides adequate nutrition while still getting the benefits of fasting.  Juicing gives the sense of preparing a meal and is easier mentally to sustain.  I recommend juicing for longer fasts.  However a 24 hour water fast  can provide numerous benefits as indicated here and you may want to try this yourself.

  1. Can you tell me how often the 24 hour water fast should be done w/out being excessive or bad for you? When they say periodic fasting is that once a month, every other month, few times a year or once a year? I want to start doing them but don’t want to do anything that is going to hurt my body/organs in anyway like doing it way too much!

    1. Some people report doing a one day water fast as often as once a week, but for most people that just won’t fit in their schedule and just isn’t necessary. If you’d like to try this regularly, start with a 24 hour fast every season and see how your body feels.

  2. I have a friend who cured herself of illness and allergies with a 30 day water fast.
My dad does a water fast once a week for the last 30 years. He is 63 and looks 45.
I am starting to incorporate a water fast every Monday. It’s a good day for me to let my body rest. I juice every morning and love it. Been replacing my daily coffee with it and feel much better.

  3. Ms Carey please do not use medical research data along with assumptions that deviate so much from the research set up.
Several doctors and test subjects where kind enough to study the outcome of a “24 hour water fast”. I appreciate their effort and I am glad they share it with us but I do not go around without being a doctor and claim that juice will not interfere with the fast.

Actually the medical community agrees that Insulin production interferes with the production of the Human Growth Hormone. That concludes that juice, which is a huge Insulin and glucose spike, will actually break the fast.
